about

Originally released in mid 2001, "Peachment" represents the first factory-pressed output of musicians Ben deHoedt and Matt Harris. Expect a lot of rough edges - especially in the vocals - but there's an undeniable energy and vibe to this EP which is carried by its songwriting and inventive arranging.

Formed in early 2000 by Ben deHoedt and Matt Harris (Mobile), The American Public began as a "beats and guitars" duo encompassing Ben and Matt's shared love of intelligent harmonic pop and fascination with the US. Joined by Tim Mortimer (The Mandelbrot Set) later that year, "Peachment" was coproduced by the group and picked up by Popgun Records. A (momentarily) simpatico, creatively ambiguous relationship emerged which saw the trio writing prolifically. With the addition of Mel Horsman on Drums, the American Public played briefly across Adelaide and Melbourne as quartet. Wash records (Faker, Dappled Cities) picked up a second EP. As creative and philosophical differences grew, Tim left the group. Through late 2002-3, the band continued building an audience in the eastern capitals before disbanding when Matt moved to Sydney. Ben now lives in Melbourne where he is completing his degree in portable clone management. Matt lives in Adelaide, building miniature space shuttles for spiders. It is rumoured that Tim lives in a perpetual state of psionic decomposition.
